Ultimate Budapest Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Budapest

Budapest quickly became one of our favorite city destinations in Europe. With its stunning architecture, historic landmarks, beautiful views over the Danube River, delicious Hungarian food, and surprisingly affordable prices compared to many other European capitals, it's easy to understand why so many travelers fall in love with this city.

What makes Budapest even more special is the contrast between its two sides. On one side, you'll find the historic hills and castles of Buda, while on the other, the vibrant streets, cafés, and iconic landmarks of Pest. Whether you're visiting for a weekend getaway, a Christmas market trip, or a summer city break, Budapest offers something for everyone.

We spent 3 days exploring the city, walking nearly 20,000 steps every day, and managed to see many of Budapest's most famous attractions while also enjoying some incredible food and unique experiences. In this guide, I'll share everything you need to know before visiting Budapest, including where to stay, what to eat, how to get around, and the best places to visit.

Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Budapest

Location

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe. The city is divided by the Danube River into two distinct areas: Buda and Pest.

Language

The official language is Hungarian. While Hungarian may look intimidating to visitors, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, and major attractions.

Currency & Money

Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (HUF), not the Euro.

Cash or Card?

Card payments are accepted almost everywhere in Budapest. During our trip, we rarely needed cash and paid for nearly everything with our credit cards.

Currency Exchange

Currency exchange offices can be found throughout the city center, but in most cases, using your bank card or withdrawing money from an ATM offers a better exchange rate.

ATMs

ATMs are easy to find around Budapest. If possible, avoid Euronet ATMs, as they often charge higher fees and provide less favorable exchange rates.

Choosing the Best Time to Visit Budapest

One of the reasons Budapest is such a great destination is that it is beautiful throughout the entire year.

Summer

Summer is perfect for exploring the city on foot, enjoying outdoor terraces, taking river cruises, and watching the sunset over the Danube. The longer daylight hours also make it easier to visit more attractions during your trip.

Winter

Budapest becomes truly magical during winter. The Christmas markets, festive decorations, warm Hungarian food, and twinkling lights transform the city into one of Europe's most charming winter destinations.

Whether you choose summer or winter, Budapest is a city that never disappoints.

How Many Days Do You Need in Budapest?

We spent 3 days in Budapest and found it to be the perfect amount of time to visit the city's main attractions.

If you prefer a slower pace, enjoy long breakfasts, cafés, museums, and want more flexibility in your schedule, 4 days would be ideal.

One thing to keep in mind is that Budapest is very walkable. We averaged around 20,000 steps per day and explored most of the city on foot.

Transportation in Budapest

Getting around Budapest is easy, efficient, and affordable.

Public Transport

Budapest has an excellent public transportation network that includes metro lines, trams, and buses.

You can purchase single-use tickets directly at metro stations using your credit card. Alternatively, you can download the BudapestGO app and purchase 24-hour or 48-hour passes, which are often the most convenient option for visitors.

Make sure you always have a valid ticket, as ticket inspectors regularly check passengers. Traveling without a ticket can result in a significant fine.

Taxi & Uber

Taxis are generally affordable in Budapest compared to many other major European cities.

Uber is also available and can be a convenient option when you're tired after a long day of sightseeing.

Understanding Budapest: Buda vs Pest

One of the most interesting things about Budapest is that it is divided into two very different sides by the Danube River.

Buda

Buda is the historic and more residential side of the city. It is known for its hills, castles, and incredible viewpoints.

Some of the most famous attractions on the Buda side include:

• Matthias Church

• Citadel

If you're looking for panoramic views over Budapest, Buda is where you'll find them.

Pest

Pest is the livelier side of the city and where most visitors spend the majority of their time.

Here you'll find:

• Hungarian Parliament Building

• St. Stephen's Basilica

• New York Café

• Hungarian State Opera House

• Ruin Bars

• Shopping streets and restaurants

Pest is flatter, easier to walk around, and full of activity throughout the day and night.

Where to Stay in Budapest

Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel

During our stay in Budapest, we stayed at the beautiful Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel.

One of the biggest reasons many travelers choose this hotel is because it is home to the world-famous New York Café, often described as the most beautiful café in the world.

The hotel's central location makes it easy to explore many of Budapest's top attractions on foot while still offering a luxurious and relaxing atmosphere after a busy day of sightseeing.

If you're looking for a memorable luxury stay in Budapest, this is definitely one of the best options in the city.

Must-Try Restaurants & Foods in Budapest

New York Café

No trip to Budapest is complete without visiting New York Café.

Many visitors come simply to admire the stunning interior, enjoy a coffee, or have breakfast or lunch in one of the most beautiful cafés in Europe.

The atmosphere alone makes it worth visiting.

White Salon Restaurant

For an even more exclusive experience, book dinner at White Salon, located on the upper balcony level overlooking New York Café.

Unlike the main café area, this section becomes a private dining space in the evening and offers spectacular views of the entire restaurant below.

The atmosphere feels incredibly elegant, the food is excellent, and it was one of the most memorable dining experiences of our trip.

Reservations are highly recommended.

Traditional Hungarian Langos

Langos is one of Hungary's most famous street foods.

This delicious fried dough is typically topped with garlic, sour cream, cheese, or other savory ingredients.

The best Langos we tried during our trip was at Retro Langos Budapest, a local favorite loved by both tourists and locals.

Chimney Cake (Kürtőskalács)

Another Hungarian classic you shouldn't miss is Chimney Cake.

If you're visiting during summer, you'll often find versions filled with ice cream. They are delicious, but if it's your first time trying chimney cake, I recommend starting with the traditional version.

You'll find excellent chimney cake stands throughout the city center.

Best Places to Visit and Take Photos in Budapest

Buda Castle

One of Budapest's most iconic landmarks, Buda Castle sits on top of Castle Hill overlooking the Danube River.

The views from the top alone make it worth visiting.

Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman's Bastion offers some of the most breathtaking views in Budapest.

We highly recommend visiting at sunrise when the city is quieter and the morning light creates incredible photo opportunities overlooking the Parliament Building.

Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament Building is arguably the most famous landmark in Budapest.

Whether viewed from across the river, from Fisherman's Bastion, or illuminated at night, it is one of the most impressive buildings in Europe. Make sure to make your photos across the river for the most beautiful scenery. Check the video link below!

St. Stephen's Basilica

One of the most important churches in Hungary and a beautiful architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Budapest.

Párisi Passage

Párisi Passage is one of Budapest's hidden architectural gems.

Its stunning interior makes it a fantastic place to stop for photos or a coffee break.

Hungarian State Opera House

The Hungarian State Opera House is one of Budapest's most beautiful landmarks and is worth visiting even if you're not attending a performance. While the exterior is stunning, you should definitely step inside to admire the grand staircase, elegant chandeliers, and beautifully decorated interiors.

If possible, book an opera or ballet performance for the full experience. Otherwise, the one-hour guided tour is a great way to explore the building and learn about its fascinating history.

Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library

This beautiful library feels more like a palace than a traditional library.

It's one of Budapest's most underrated attractions and a dream location for photographers. It's a must visit location in the city!

Liberty Bridge

One of the most photogenic bridges in Budapest and a beautiful place to walk while enjoying views of the Danube and you get to see Budapest's iconic yellow trams.

Szimpla Kert

Budapest is famous for its ruin bars, and Szimpla Kert is the most iconic of them all.

Its unique atmosphere and creative interior make it a must-visit, especially in the evening.

Vajdahunyad Castle

Located inside City Park, Vajdahunyad Castle looks like something straight out of a fairytale. Built to showcase different architectural styles found across Hungary, it's one of the most beautiful and underrated spots in Budapest. Just a short walk from the castle, you'll also find the famous Anonymous Statue. Legend says that touching the mysterious figure's pen brings good luck and inspires creativity, making it a fun tradition to try during your visit.

Buda Castle Funicular

The historic Buda Castle Funicular connects the riverfront with Castle Hill and offers a fun way to reach the castle area while enjoying beautiful views. Make sure to get on the bridge to view the Funicular and the stunning view of the city!

Budapest exceeded my expectations in every possible way. From grand historic buildings and incredible viewpoints to delicious food and unique experiences, the city offers the perfect mix of culture, history, architecture, and atmosphere.

Whether you're visiting for a long weekend, a summer city break, or a magical Christmas getaway, Budapest is a destination that deserves a place on every Europe bucket list.

If it's your first time visiting, I recommend spending at least 3 days exploring both Buda and Pest, trying local Hungarian food, and enjoying the city's incredible architecture.
